Another Bottle of Rum https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2021/1/another-bottle-of-rum A gift from a neighbor. I used a monitor behind the bottle to display a digital background. I sat the bottle on black plexi for the reflection. I exposed for the background. Then used a flash to light the front of the bottle. To eliminate bright highlights on the glass I used a technique call cross polarization. Then processed in LightRoom and Photoshop.

Wild Salsify https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2020/7/wild-salsify I have seen these huge "dandelions" this year. Turns out they are Salsify which is a root vegetable and is a member of the dandelion family. Also called vegetable oyster. Salsify can be used as a replacement for nearly any root crop – especially potatoes. Boil it, mash it, put it in your favorite soups and stews or simply cube it and sauté it in butter with its greens. You can even use it in place of potatoes in au gratin or scalloped potatoes recipes.

Practice https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2020/4/practice During our COVID-19 social distancing I have been participating in a number of informal training sessions coordinated by Kelly Schneider on his FaceBook group "KSFINEARTS- The Art of Taking Powerful Portraits". Here is an old image I shot of Brandon Turner. I added a textured background using the Adobe Texture Panel. I added wings from PurePNG. Used Kelly Schneider's dodge and burn actions. I blended the background using techniques from Dave Kelly.

Adding Clouds to Flower Image https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2020/4/adding-clouds-to-flower-image In this photo I shot the columbine with a blue background (i.e., blue construction paper). While in PhotoShop I opened Luminar 4 and selected Artificial Intelligence Sky Replacement. Luminar 4 automatically figures out what is sky and what is not sky and masks out the flower. You can adjust the mask if needed. I used the default. I then used one of Luminar 4's many choices of sky. Here you can see the original and the new image with the sky.

For my photography club friends: I shot this using my Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II. I used a tripod and a 60mm macro lens as well as a cable release. I shot these at ISO 200, F9, 1/6 sec. I used a light box for light. I shot 8-15 photos varying the focus and did focus stacking in camera to get the flower in focus. Minimal post processing in LightRoom and PhotoShop.

Dandelion Macro https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2020/4/dandelion-macro Given we are supposed to be staying home due to COVID-19 social distancing, looking for things to photograph. Today I found lots of Dandelions in all their glory in my neighbors yard. In fact they have chosen to have mostly Dandelion vs. grass. :) So I thought I would play around and try to make some marco photographs.

For my photography club friends: I shot this using my Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II. I used a tripod and a 60mm macro lens as well as a cable release. I shot these at ISO 200, F9, .4 sec. I used a light box for light. I shot 8 photos varying the focus and did focus stacking in camera to get the flower in focus.

B-CCC February Photography Competition Winning Images - People, Not Portraits https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2019/3/b-ccc-february-photography-competition-winning-images---people-not-portraits The theme for February at the Bowie-Crofton Camera Club was "People, Not Portraits," which was defined as "This topic encourages the photographer to explore not only people's faces but also the hands and other symbols of the subject's essence (e.g., the hands and gloves of a construction worker, a violinist's hand holding a bow or a baseball player holding a bat, the feet of a ballet dancer, etc) The primary emphasis should be on the people (e.g.,on the raised hands of several basketball players, but not on the basketball). Formal portraits, indoors or outdoors, are not permissible, but a “staged candid “ is acceptable, meaning people who know you are photographing them, and they may be posing, but not for remuneration—a child doing something interesting; a worker's face as he puts it all into what he's working on; not a wedding photo."

B-CCC December Photography Competition Winning Image - Insides of Anything https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2018/12/b-ccc-december-photography-competition-winning-image---insides-of-anything The theme for November at the Bowie-Crofton Camera Club was "Insides of Anything" defined as Cars, houses, stores, nuts, a sandwich, a tunnel—just so it is clear to all that the subject of the photograph is an interior, not an exterior. Examples: the nut, not the shell; a window from the inside, not the outside; the rings of a great tree, when sliced; a flower, cut in half; a dashboard on a car. And, of course, a great photo!

I submitted two B&W images and had two winners.

Eastern Red Columbine https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2018/5/eastern-red-columbine I planted these Eastern Red Columbine's in my garden a couple of years ago. They don't appear to like the heat. I'm surprised they survived. this year for some reason they have grown into a small bush and look great. I hope they keep propagating. I made this shot by focus stacking in Helicon Focus. I lit it with a Lume Cube.

Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land in America https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2018/1/franciscan-monastery-of-the-holy-land-in-america-2 So what do you do when you are furloughed? We decided that traffic in and around D.C. mid morning wouldn't be bad considering the Federal Government was closed today. So Dawn and I went to the Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land in America. Beautiful grounds and church. It was kind of like a pilgrimage for people who couldn't afford to actually go to the Holy Lands. They recreated many pilgrimage sites for you to visit on the grounds.

Just what the heck is an abstract scape? Well its a landscape, cityscape, seascape that is abstract. This was a challenging theme for both the club members and the judge. Some images leaned to far towards a pure landscape, seascape, cityscape and some leaned to far towards the abstract. The judge also wasn't a big fan of some classic techniques where you move the camera while taking the photo (e.g., camera swipes and swirls). I had two honorable mentions.

My first honorable mention was a multiple exposure

My Second honorable mention was this shop taken at the Walt Disney Music Hall in California. This one leaned more toward abstract architecture than a landscape. It's all about the patterns and lines. I printed it on metallic paper.

This was probably the best auto show I have seen in the local area. Hundreds of cars of all types. It was hosted by the "Lost in the 50's Custom Car Club of Maryland". This was a fundraiser for their Salvation Army Christmas toy fund. Here are a few images:

McKee-Beshers WMA Sunflowers https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2017/8/mckee-beshers-wma-sunflowers Dawn and I caught the last of the sunflowers this year at McKee-Beshers WMA. They were already fading heads down heavy with seeds. According to the website "Located on River Road in Western Montgomery County, McKee-Beshers WMA is a 2,000-acre tract in a mixture of woodlands, fields, wooded bottomland and managed wetland impoundments (green-tree reservoirs). The WMA shares a common boundary with the National Park Service Chesapeake and Ohio Canal to the south and borders Seneca Creek State Park, a 1,200-acre public hunting area, on the east."

Here are some photos from that outing. How come sunflowers always make you happy?

Lighting and Posing Workshop https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2017/7/lighting-and-posing-workshop Today I attended my friend David Bleckman's Lighting and Posing Workshop. The model was Lexi Carter. I'm reasonably good at shooting portraits in my little basement studio but needed some practice shooting environmental portraits balancing ambient light with strobes. The weather turned out great. I learned a few things and had a lot of fun. Here are a few shots from today.

Garden Macros https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2017/7/garden-macros I went out early this morning to try my hand at shooting some macros in my garden. I use an Olympus E-M1 with a 60mm Macro and a Lumecube to kick in some light. There were lots of Balloon flowers, Cone Flowers, Daylilies, and Black Eyed Susan in bloom. In addition to lots of Bees I found a couple of yellow and black garden spiders.

Balloon Flowers https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2017/6/balloon-flowers A few year ago I purchased four small balloon flowers from Homestead Gardens. Every year I have been harvesting the seeds and spreading them throughout my flower beds. Now I end up with hundreds of balloon flowers and lots of pretty blue flowers throughout. They go nicely with the orange, yellows, pinks in my garden.

Here are a couple of images to show you why they are called balloon flowers. They look just like a balloon until they pop open.

Horseshoe Crabs at Slaughter Beach https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2017/6/horseshoe-crabs-at-slaughter-beach Dawn, Samantha, and I spent Friday afternoon and Saturday morning at Slaughter Beach, Delaware. Out goal to see the annual migration and mating of the horseshoe crabs. Slaughter Beach is a horseshoe crab sanctuary where they are protected from harvesting. Horseshoe crabs are prehistoric. They come to the beaches every year between May and June during high tide and the full moon to mate and lay their eggs. We made our way to the beach Friday afternoon. There were no crabs in sight but the remnants of some dead ones from previous high tide. We came back after dinner. Watched the full strawberry moon rise. Still no crabs. We waited until near 10pm and still no crabs. We called it a night. On Saturday morning we went to the  DuPont Nature Center and we could see crabs on the beach using their remote controlled 360' camera. So we went back to the beach around time for high tide and there they were. Here are some photos.

There were also lots of cactus in bloom which attracted lots of bees. Bee on Cactus Flower Bee on Cactus Flower

You could enter one image per event you attended into digital, monochrome prints, and color prints contests. I only entered the digital contest this year. Entering the print contests over the last two years turned out to not be worth the paper and ink. I had two winning image.

The image titled "Kenilworth Garden Lotus" won first place. The funny thing is the judge was Frank Van Riper who said he doesn't like flower photos.

By the time we got to the digital contests, it was after 9PM and I already suspected this judge wasn't going to give me 1st through 3rd place and it was pouring down rain and I had a 30 minute drive, so I headed home. Thus I have no idea what he said about this flower. Blue Flower

If you are still reading, you may wonder what did win. The two main attractions at Bombay Hook are the birds and the foxes. We saw lots of birds. Mostly ducks and geese. We had an Eagle fly over. Saw a couple of hawks and herons. Unfortunately most were back lit in the afternoon. In the future will have to remember to go in the morning. We did get lucky and find a fox hunting.

ACC December Decay Competition Loosing Images https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2016/12/acc-december-decay-competition-loosing-images The theme for December at the Arundel Camera Club was "Decay." I have already posted about my winning images.  Here are a couple of my loosing images. I really liked these and I am disappointed they didn't place.

Asylum Womens AnnexFender

This one is titled "Fender." The judges comments included that he didn't know what the focus was the headlight or the fender. He also didn't like the black under the wheel well. He wanted some detail. Now this is a digital version of the image. The one entered into the contest was a print. He also said is was too dark for his taste. Comparing the two, the print is a little darker. The next time I enter this one, I will reprint it a little brighter.

Skulls

This one is titled "Skulls" and I think it is a good still life that fits the decay theme perfectly. Of all the images that won, most were of old buildings, boats, cars. Few were of living things that were dying, dead, and/or decaying. There was one winner of some tomatoes dying on a withered vine and there were several of mushrooms.

Green Mount Cemetery https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2016/12/green-mount-cemetery The Arundel Camera Club's November field trip was to the Green Mount Cemetery in Baltimore Maryland.

The cemetery was established in 1838 and it is noted for the large number of historical figures interred in its grounds as well as a large number of prominent Baltimore-area families. The cemetery was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. Guided tours are available at various times of the year.

This is one of my favorite refuges. This was also the first real chance I had to try out my new Nikon D500 shooting birds. There were plenty of blue herons, eagles, ducks, terns, and geese. None of the eagles got close enough to get a good shot. The terns were a lot of fun to try and shoot. Lost Love https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2016/11/lost-love The theme for the November contest at the Bowie-Crofton Camera Club was "Love". Love was not further defined. I previously blogged about my one winning image here. Today I want to post about my loosing images. Now unfortunately I was out of town and didn't get to hear the judges critique in person. I also didn't get to see the other images I was competing against.

Deana and Brandon - Clearly these two look like they really like each other. Romantic embrace. Intimate. By the way they are both great models. If you are in the Baltimore area, you should work with them. Deanna and Brandon
Live Laugh Love - It literally says "love" right on her. Another judge recently said this image wasn't as sharp as it should be. Live Laugh Love
Sibling Love - Maybe the judge didn't get along with their siblings. Sibling Love
Candy Harts - What can I say. This is a yearly symbol of love around Valentine's day. I figured others might submit roses, so I wanted another symbol of love. Candy Hearts
Light of Love - So I guess the judge did not buy the Cross reference to Christianity and the Love of God sacrificing his only son. Loves Light

Love was not further defined. I had one winning image. The model is Brandon Turner. I liked the tattoo of "Love" on his arm. He's great looking and seams like a nice person. Very easy to work with. If you are in Baltimore and need a male model, I highly recommend him.

One of the really cool things about this garden is at the end of May each year, always the Saturday morning of Memorial Day weekend starting at 7:00 AM the tulip bulbs are available to be dug and purchased for a nominal cost of 30 cents per bulb.

World War II Weekend - Transportation https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2016/6/world-war-ii-weekend---transportation As usual there were an amazing number of military vehicles at the World War II Weekend - Mid-Atlantic Air Museum in Pennsylvania. ACC May Club Events Photography Competition https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2016/5/acc-may-club-events-photography-competition This week the Arundel Camera Club held there May "Club Events" competition. This competition is supposed to be fun and doesn't count towards the end of year rankings. Any club member can enter photos from any of the club events they attended during the club year. Club events include picnics, banquets, meetings, field trips, tabletop nights. They can enter one color print, one monochrome print, and one digital for each club event they attended. The best of show wins a free membership for the next year worth a whopping $35.00. This year we had above average attendance at our events and had a good number of novice (~31) and unlimited (~25) digital images submitted. Here are my winning unlimited digital images.

There were not enough unlimited color or monochrome prints to hold contests. When this happens, we usually merge the unlimited and novice images. However we ask the members if anyone has an issue. Unfortunately on this occasion several novice members objected. They didn't want to compete against the unlimited images. This is unfortunate because this is the first time this has happened in my 10 years in the club. In the past the novices have often done well in combined competitions even beating out their unlimited competitors. To me after having spent hours selecting, editing, printing, re-printing and matting images as well as the expense of printing; this was a let down. I was very disappointed to say the least. Wood Ducks https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2016/4/wood-ducks I love bird photography. I have been trying to get a good photo of a wood duck for years. I have always found wood ducks to be shy and if I get close they always fly away. The first two photos were taken at the Palma Sola Botanical Park in Bradenton Florida near my parent's house. I've come to the conclusion I would need to camp out in a camouflage blind to get a good photo here.

Last week I shot the following images at the Rio Grande Nature Center State Park in New Mexico. I was behind a blind so the ducks didn't seem too concerned. I shot these at 550mm. This was the first time I have ever seen wood ducks at this park. I was able to shoot from a bird blind.

Samantha https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2016/3/samantha I had to set up my lights last weekend to shoot some head shots for one of my friends. Since the lights were already set up, Samantha came down with several dresses for me to photograph her in. I still find portrait work, especially with teenagers, challenging. Unlike professional models, they don't know what to do nor do they follow instructions. I guess that's what makes it fun.

Geometric Shapes https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2016/2/geometric-shapes Later this year the Arundel Camera Club will host a competition with the theme of geometric shapes. I took this snow day as an opportunity to try some experiments out. I shot these on black Plexiglass against a black backdrop. I used a colored gelled flash bounced off of the backdrop to create the color. Turns out it is a challenge to get the marbles to stay where I wanted them. It was also difficult to keep the Plexiglass clean. Because the marbles act like fisheye lenses, everything is reflected in them which creates another challenge. Unfortunately I had to clean these up in Photoshop. I got the inspiration for these shots and compositions from other photographers on Flickr.

Some of My First Portraits https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2016/2/some-of-my-first-portraits During the blizzard last week, when I wasn't clearing snow, I was cleaning out my office. Buried in a box I found some of my first portraits. These three portraits were taken sometime between 1979 and 1981 while I was a yearbook photographer in high school. They are old prints that I scanned. Other than actually scanning old black and whites out of yearbooks, these are the oldest samples of my photography. They were originally shot on film using my dad's Nikkormat. I still have that camera. You can find it here on a previous blog post.

Olympus OM-D E-M1 - Focus Stacking https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2015/12/olympus-om-d-e-m1---focus-stacking I love some of the new features in my new Olympus OM-D E-M1. They just released a firmware update that includes a new feature called Focus Stacking. This lets you take multiple shots shifting the focus and compositing them to create a final image with a very deep depth of field (i.e. larger than f/22) all in camera.

In the following shot I focused on the Snapple bottle. Notice my wife is out of focus in the background.

In this last shot I used the new Focus Stacking feature. Notice my wife and the Snapple bottle are in focus.

All three images were shot at 1/30 sec at F2.8 15mm ISO400.

In the past, the photographer had to make an artistic decision about what was in focus or not and how much bokeh. But sometimes the photographer wants everything to be in focus. The physics of aperture and depth of field prevented that. Photographers developed a painstaking process to take many photos at different focal lengths and compositing (e.g., stacking them) in software like Photoshop to get the desired depth of field. Using focus stacking, you can do this in camera now. This is great for landscape and macro photography.

New Camera and Night Photography https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2015/11/new-camera-and-night-photography-2 I have had the urge to buy a new camera. I would love the mythical Nikon 400s but it has never materialized. Over the last year the mirrorless cameras have been garnering a lot of attention. It would be nice to have a smaller camera for travelling. In the end it came down to the Fujifilm X-T1 and the Olympus OM-D E-M1. The X-T1 is a great camera but the Olympus had some features that really attracted me including: Live Bulb and Live Comp and the soon to be released firmware upgrade that adds focus stacking.

  • Live Bulb lets you see your image as it "develops" during a long exposure night shot on bulb mode. No more guessing how long to hold the shutter release in bulb mode.
  • Live Comp is even more interesting. It was designed to take a base exposure and the keep taking exposures adding new light to the base image. This is supposed to be good for light painting, star trails, etc.

Ron Peiffer and I went out shooting Friday night in Baltimore for an upcoming night photography contest. You can find Ron's photos at RonPeiffer.com. Here are some of my shots from last night from Baltimore's inner harbor including the iconic Domino Sugar sign, the Baltimore tugboat, and the National Aquarium.

The Pano of the Baltimore tugboat was shot in Live Bulb mode.

My limited experience shooting Street Photography leads me to believe there are two kinds of subjects: those who don't know you are taking their photo and those that don't like you taking their photo.

Maryland Renaissance Festival - People https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2015/10/maryland-renaissance-festival---people The Arundel Camera Club field tip this month was to the Maryland Renaissance Festival. I guess I have never been there before at this time of year. Normally I go in earlier. This was the most crowded I have ever seen it. I understand they sold out in the afternoon. Needless to say being crowded made it difficult to get any good photos in the afternoon. Here are some portraits I was able to come away with. Unlike Street Photography everyone at the festival that is dressed up seems to want to get their photos taken.

Baltimore Farmers Market https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2015/10/baltimore-farmers-market I love going up to Baltimore Sunday mornings to the JFX  Farmers Market. Not only can we buy fresh fruits, vegetables, bread, and cheese; it's a great place to practice some street photography. There are usually lots of street buskers out playing instruments. The theme for Arundel Camera Club's October competition is street. These are some of the shots I got this morning.

Headshot https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2015/10/headshot So when I showed my wife the photos of Samantha from Homecoming, she said, I cut off her head. On my part this was a conscious decision. I just finished reading Peter Hurley's new book on head shots, "The Headshot: The Secrets to Creating Amazing Headshot Portraits". You can see more of his work here. My efforts pale in comparison but I still like the results.

untitled shoot DSC_1079untitled shoot DSC_1079

One of the tips in his book to get your subject to relax and get a natural smile was "“I want your best blowfish impression". I have to say it worked.

Longwood Gardens: Nightscapes https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2015/9/longwood-gardens-nightscapes Went up to Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania recently to see the Nightscape exhibits/show. We have been to several previous nigh time displays at Longwood Gardens. This one is very different than the previous events which were more static and primarily used fiber optics. This was more like lights and videos being projected on shrubbery and other vegetation. So to photograph the moving displays I often had to use higher ISO. It was kind of like trying to photograph a dimly lit TV program.

Lonaconing Silk Mill https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2015/9/lonaconing-silk-mill We went on the Arundel Camera Club's field trip to the Lonaconing Silk Mill. This is a time capsule that is slowly deteriorating. It was one of, if not the last silk mill in the country. At one point it employed 400 people. Mostly the wives of coal miners. The youngest employee was a 7 year old girl. This is the second time I have visited. Probably my last. The roof is giving way and the owner can't afford to repair it. Once it goes, the rest will follow quickly.

Joint Base Andrews Airshow: Thunderbirds https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2015/9/joint-base-andrews-airshow-thunderbirds Friday Russ, Dawn, and I spent the day at Joint Base Andrews Airshow. Due to Sequestration the show was cancelled the last couple of years so it was great to see it back. The weather was great. Morning was a little back lit. I forgot my Nikkor 28-300 and had to borrow my wife's Tamron 28-300. I wish I had gone to the trouble of bringing a second camera with my tripod and a larger lens. This was the first time I have seen the Thunderbirds. They are just as impressive as the Blue Angels. Russ thought the Blue Angels were more photogenic with their color scheme. Here are a few images of the Thunderbirs.

Critique Common Objects https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2015/9/critique-common-objects David Blecman's Annapolis Photography Workshop Group hosted a critique/competition tonight with the theme of "common Objects".  Here are my three entries.

The judge's debated if this one was sharp enough but seemed to like the lighting and composition.

Russian Pocket Watch

The judge said this image was flat. He liked the red color. He didn't seem to like the horizon line. The darker line of red in the background middle of frame.

Chinese Opium Snuff Bottle

The judges really liked this image and awarded it first place.

I have no idea how to interpret next month's theme which is "first thing or last thing".

Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2015/7/trans-allegheny-lunatic-asylum In July my wife and I drove to West Virginia to visit the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum for a photographic tour. The tour was led by Don Rosenberger of Road Runner Photography Tours. This was a long four to five hour drive from Baltimore. Let me just say there isn't anything else nearby. We met first thing in the morning and had four hours to roam the halls, wings, and rooms. This was before the Asylum opened for tours. The night before we drove by and saw a lot of cars. Apparently they had an overnight Paranormal Tour. The oldest, largest, main building is partially restored and furnished but as you roam further down the wards the areas were in a state of decay. The had so many women committed to the asylum they had to build an annex. This annex is in a really bad state of decay. They also had a violent women's ward. Why you ask were there so many insane woman? Apparently "desertion by husband" was a legitimate reason to have your wife committed.

Thanks to Chip for coming over and helping me fine tune my setup before hand. They opened up around nine barns to the public from the scenic Sugarloaf Mountain Region. The tour provided a rare opportunity to gain access to some of Frederick County's most scenic and private farm properties.

4th of July Fireworks Baltimore Inner Harbor https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2015/7/4th-of-july-fireworks-baltimore-inner-harbor Dawn and I camped out at Baltimore's Inner Harbor for the forth of July this year. This is the first time I have ever gone to the fireworks in Baltimore. I used my new lightning trigger which is supposed to be good for detecting fireworks as well. The trigger did exceptionally well. All I had to do was compose, set the exposure, and manual focus.

Old Truck Graveyard https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2015/6/old-truck-graveyard In May my wife and I went down to The Truck Graveyard in Columbia, Virginia with Don Rosenberger's Road Runner Photography Tours. There were barns and fields full of old rusting trucks. It is a bonanza for people who like to shoot old vehicles, rust, and HDR. The only issue we had was the deer ticks. We each found several on ourselves.

World War II Weekend - People https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2015/6/world-war-ii-weekend---mid-atlantic-air-museum-in-pennsylvania-people I spent the day at the World War II Weekend - Mid-Atlantic Air Museum in Pennsylvania. This is my second time going. I always get distracted when the airplanes start flying. This year I tried to get some portraits in the morning. You have to give a lot of credit to the folks who are so dedicated to making this a great event.

May Digital Club Events Competition Winning Images https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2015/6/may-digital-club-events-competition-winning-images In may the Arundel Camera Club hosted a club events competition. We could enter one image from each club event we attended during the club year. I attended lots of events so I got to enter lots of images which proportionally resulted in lots of wins for me. Unfortunately we didn't have enough prints to hold the print competitions.

Ottawa Street Buskers https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2015/6/ottawa-street-buskers I'm not a big fan of taking photos of strangers. However I have a contest next year with the theme of "Street" photography. so I decided that I have to start trying. Here are some shots of street musicians from Ottawa. I shot these in color. Did you ever notice most street photography is black and white?

I especially liked the tulips in front of the Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica with the Canadian flag. I'm surprised I even looked up from the flowers to see it.

Ottawa Tulip Festival https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2015/6/ottawa-tulip-festival The tulip festival can be traced back to World War II when Canada gave refuge to the Dutch family In appreciation their Queen sent thousands of tulips to Ottawa every year of her reign. You can find the history here. I only had time to wonder around the gardens in the late afternoon the first day I arrived. Here are some tulip photos from the festival.

April Color Print Competition Winning Image https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2015/5/april-print-competition-winning-images I have fallen behind on my blogging. I had one Honorable Mention in the Arundel Camera Club April Environmental Portraits Combined Color Print Competition. I'm not really a portrait photographer. Even though I thought I understood what an environmental portrait was, between the two judges and what they selected as winning environmental portraits, I really have no idea. One judge insisted they subjects be doing something. Another judge threw out "business" and "sports" portraits. In the end there were winners that I wouldn't even consider a portrait.

Holland in Haymarket https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2015/5/holland-in-haymarket We went to Burnside Farms for their Festival of Spring - Holland in Haymarket. This is a great opportunity to photograph fields of tulips and daffodils. Later they will have Dutch Iris and this summer Sunflowers. We went with Road Runner Photography Tours Meetup Group. Then went back with my mother. Needless to say we had a blast picking and photographing the tulips. Well worth the trip. It only cost $4 to get in but we spent a lot more on tulips at $1 each. Photographing tulips makes you happy. Just like photographing Hot Air Balloons, Butterflies, and Sunflowers. Here are some of my tulip shots.

You are not allowed to bring in tripods or monopods, the lighting is not great, and it is difficult to find a clean background for your photos. Here are some of my shots

Table Top Night - Food https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2015/3/table-top-night---food These food shots are from this week's Arundel Camera Club table top night. Every so often the club has a table top night. This is where people bring in things to arrange on a table top to shoot. This can be macro and still life. We also bring in our cameras and lighting equipment. This is really an opportunity to practice and learn from other club members. The theme this week was food.

David awarded "National Cathedral" an Honorable Mention. This was my only "win."

David seem to like the fact I chose to enter a black and white image. This was my favorite image of the three I entered.

Here is my last entry. David's only constructive input was that the bottom of the photo could/should have been cropped. Too much negative space.

Impromptu Field Trip to the National Cathedral https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2015/1/impromptu-field-trip-to-the-national-cathedral Last weekend the Arundel Camera Club had an impromptu field trip to the National Cathedral. Six of us converged on the Cethedral. This time of year the midday light comes in through the stained glass windows. After shooting in the morning we had lunch at the Cathedral then resumed shooting. I can think of only a few comparable subjects to the Cathedral at this time of year like shooting butterflies, sunflowers, and the Albuquerque Balloon Festival.

The Capital Wheel at National Harbor https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2014/12/the-capital-wheel-at-national-harbor Dawn, Sam, and I spent the night at the Gaylord Marriott at the National Harbor. We went down for dinner, to see the Christmas show, do some shopping. While Sam and Dawn went to the new outlets, I took photos of the Capital Wheel. I varied the duration of the photos by bracketing with Triggertrap. This generated random patterns of lights on the wheel. The longer the duration the less black gaps showed in the lights. Here are some of the photos.

Critique Kitchen Utensils https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2014/12/critique-kitchen-utensils David Blecman's Annapolis Photography Workshop Group hosted a critique/competition last night with the theme of "Kitchen Utensils". Here are my three entries.

David awarded "Forked Pickle" first place. This was my only winning image from the night. He only constructive criticism was that the fork should be a little darker at the bottom of the photo. Last month David was the worst judge ever but this month he is the best judge ever. Funny how that works. :)

Forked Pickle1st Place Kitchen Utensils

David said my second entry titled "Stacked Forks" had a little too much space at the bottom and not enough at the top which left you wanting to see more of the top fork. He had lots of good comments otherwise.

Forks Stacked

Here is my last entry. This one was supposed to be a little creepy/Gothic horror. David liked the exposure on the girl holding the knife. He didn't like the harsh shadows cast on the floor and wall by the light on the bed. He also didn't like how the bedspread was blown our near closest to the light. These are all valid criticisms. I ran out of time. I used two lights. The first lighted the girl with the knife and was in a softbox and metered. The second was a bare strobe. I knew I should have run down to the basement to get another softbox but the ladies were impatient and it was late at night. This was the only photo submitted tonight with people in it.

Critique Candy https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2014/11/critique---candy David Blecman's Annapolis Photography Workshop Group hosted a critique/competition tonight with the theme of candy. Here are my three entries. I didn't win anything.

David said my first shot titled "Lollipop" that the background was overexposed by a half stop to a stop.

LollipopLollipop

David said my second entry title "Thin Ribbon Candy" wasn't sharp and he didn't like the little bit of candy sticking up at the very end of the ribbon.

Thin Ribbon CandyThin Ribbon Candy

Here is my last entry. This is my niece Samantha and what's left of her Halloween candy. I cut a box to just the right size and cut out a place for her neck. I put a pillow in the bottom and she laid down with her head in the box. Then I filled it with candy. Sam was a great sport so I had to use enter one.

Strobist Halloween https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2014/10/strobist-halloween Samantha, Dawn, and I carved our Halloween Pumpkins Sunday. I thought they deserved to be photographed. To create this photo each pumpkin has a gelled strobe in it. There is another strobe with a gel pointing at the background. I triggered these strobes using Nikon Creative Lighting System. I then fired off my Alien Bee with a pocket Wizard for some fill light. I ran out of batteries for all of my strobes.

Sunflowers https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2014/9/sunflowers Dawn and I were able to go see the sunflowers last Friday. Just in time. They are already fading. One thing that bothered us were how many people were picking the sunflowers. This is a cash crop for the farm and they asked people not to pick them. Here are a few from around sunset.

Pride of Baltimore https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2014/9/pride-of-baltimore This past weekend I went out to photograph the Pride of Baltimore II. She was making several long tours to Fort Howard for Defender's Day. This was a great start to the Star Spangled Spectacular this week. On Saturday from Fort Armistead I photographed her sailing back from Fort Howard. On Sunday I went out again with Eris and Zolt. I wanted to photograph her coming out under the key bridge.

Another Sale https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2014/9/another-sale I have been participating in David Blecman's meetup group The Annapolis Photography Workshop Group and Sidestreet Framers and Gift Gallery's monthly photo critiques. After the critique, the gallery selects images to be matted and hung in their store for a month. After the first month they are displayed in a bin in the store for another month. Then they have arranged to display the photographs at local venues. While hanging in the City Dock Coffee in Annapolis, the following image sold last week.

Glaze https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2014/7/glaze Glaze is one of my new favorite iOS apps. It lets you apply painterly effects to your images. I learned about this app from Karen Messick. You can find out more about this app here. Here are some of my garden photos that I have Glazed. I'm not sure you would consider the output to be photography. The photographs are more raw material input into the artistic process. Of course you could argue the credit for the resulting image is more Glaze than the photographer.

Old Barns https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2014/6/old-barns Near my house I've seen an old abandoned barn completely overgrown. It didn't look photogenic or accessible due to years of vegetation overgrowing the property. It must have sold and is now going to be cleared and torn down for a new development. Recently I noticed tractors clearing the growth. I went out there this week and took a few photos before they completely clear the ground. The only hostory I could find online was that a house was built in 1938.

I just wanted to get out and do something. I took my little Sony RX100 II. It had been an overcast day and I was hoping for a good sunset. One Last Set of Water Balloon Popping https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2014/2/one-last-set-of-popping-water-balloon Dick Chomitz called me up and gave me a simple solution to my lighting problem. I had an Nikkon SB800 and a Nikon SB900. I wanted to set them to 1/128 power but the photographs were underexposed. I needed to add another strobe but I didn't have any with slave mode. Dick suggested I use my iPhone with the Triggertrap to trigger one of my non SU mode Metz 48 strobes and use it to trigger my two Nikkon strobes which both had SU mode. This worked great. See below for results. I still had to tweak the whites and black in Lightroom.

By the way the most challenging part of this is hitting the balloon in near total darkness with a miniature blow dart.

More Balloon Popping with the Triggertrap https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2014/2/more-balloon-popping-with-the-triggertrap Ok I made a few more shots of water balloons popping today. The only difference from yesterday was trying some different strobe power settings to make the exposure brighter. Unfortunately I don't have any more strobes that have a slave mode. My Alien Bees do but they are not fast enough. The first of these was done using an Alien Bee at lowest power setting (1/32) and was too slow and bright. I had to darken it in LightRoom. The other three were done with my Nikon Strobes at 1/64 power, I did move them closer to the balloons. I had to brighten them in LightRoom. Also note in the two images in the right column, you can see the small black blow dart I used to pop the balloons.

High Speed Photography with Triggertrap Mobile https://mikethomas.photos/blog/2014/2/high-speed-photography-with-triggertrap-mobile OK as many of you know I'm stuck at home recovering from surgery. To kill the time today I played with one of my Christmas gifts from my wife. She saw this on TV. I used the Triggertrap mobile app on my iPhone to take a high speed shot of a water balloon popping. I know it's cliche but it is a lot of fun.

Setup

To try and keep the mess contained, I did this in my basement bathroom. I tacked up some black cloth for the background in the tub. I used a PVC pipe to create a crossbeam across the tub to hang the balloon from. I used black shoelace to hang the balloon.

For the lighting I had one Nikkon SB900 on a light stand camera left. This is the light that was connected to the Triggertrap and my iPhone. I had a Nikkon SB800 on a light stand camera right. This one was in SU mode so that it fires when the other strobe fires. Both were set to 128 power to get the fasted strobe and thus freeze the motion better.

I had my Nikkon D300s on a tripod in manual focus mode focused on the balloon. It was in bulb mode and I used a cable release to start and stop the bulb mode.

To pop the balloon I made a miniature blow dart out of a drinking straw, some shoelace, a pin, and some black tape. In most of the photos I have seen, the method used to pop the balloon was visible (e.g., a hand with a needle, and dart, a pellet from a BB gun). I wanted mine to be unobtrusive.

Results

It took me 12 test shots and five balloons before I was ready to try a balloon filled with water. I had to move the iPhone as close as possible to the balloon so that the sound sensor would trigger faster. Remember that you want to keep your iPhone safe and dry. It took me six tries before I was able to actually pop the balloon. It turned out that even at close range it was hard to hit the balloon with a blow dart in the dark. Here is my first successful shot. The shot was underexposed and I had to tweak it in PhotoShop. I guess I need to add another strobe to get enough light.
