In July my wife and I drove to West Virginia to visit the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum for a photographic tour. The tour was led by Don Rosenberger of Road Runner Photography Tours. This was a long four to five hour drive from Baltimore. Let me just say there isn't anything else nearby. We met first thing in the morning and had four hours to roam the halls, wings, and rooms. This was before the Asylum opened for tours. The night before we drove by and saw a lot of cars. Apparently they had an overnight Paranormal Tour. The oldest, largest, main building is partially restored and furnished but as you roam further down the wards the areas were in a state of decay. The had so many women committed to the asylum they had to build an annex. This annex is in a really bad state of decay. They also had a violent women's ward. Why you ask were there so many insane woman? Apparently "desertion by husband" was a legitimate reason to have your wife committed.
